Iran conflict’s economic impact alarming, warns Erdoğan on global markets.

In a pointed statement reflecting on the global ramifications of current geopolitical tensions, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized the interconnected nature of today’s world, stating that no nation can insulate itself from crises that erupt elsewhere. Speaking in Ankara after a Cabinet meeting, Erdoğan highlighted how the economic and political tremors from the conflict in Iran are reverberating internationally, manifesting through issues like inflation, supply chain disruptions, and instability in energy markets.

Erdoğan elaborated on the consequences of globalization and economic interdependence, noting that regional conflicts now have far-reaching impacts that can influence global stability. He illustrated this point with a metaphor, saying, “When a country in the Middle East sneezes today, a country in Latin America or Asia can easily catch a cold.” The uncertainty following the February 28 attacks on Iran exemplifies a multilayered crisis with implications far beyond its immediate vicinity.

The Turkish president pointed out several indicators of this global fragility, such as fluctuating fuel prices, increasing inflation, ongoing supply chain challenges, and persistent obstacles in the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that the true extent of the economic damage is still unclear. Criticizing a system he sees as driven by speculation and market manipulation, Erdoğan accused a select group of capitalists of profiting at the expense of billions worldwide, from Africa to Latin America.

Erdoğan observed that while global financial elites continue to prosper amid conflict and instability, middle- and lower-income families find themselves grappling with diminishing purchasing power and escalating living costs. “Every war creates its own economy. Every war has its winners and losers. But with the Iran war, this has exceeded the limits of tolerance and reached destructive levels for global economic prosperity,” he remarked.

Shifting focus to domestic issues, Erdoğan criticized the disproportionate price rises in Türkiye’s markets, suggesting that such increases cannot be solely attributed to production or transportation costs, given Türkiye’s relatively low energy costs within Europe. He assured that authorities are actively pursuing measures against exploitative pricing practices, urging businesses to contribute towards maintaining market stability. Erdoğan also condemned Israel’s recent attacks, describing them as “piracy” and “banditry” and reaffirming Türkiye’s solidarity with the Palestinian people, particularly in light of the assault on the Global Sumud Flotilla.
