Türkiye has restored high-level diplomatic representation with Syria by appointing Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yılmaz as its new ambassador to Damascus, marking the first such appointment since relations were downgraded more than a decade ago. The decision was confirmed through the Official Gazette with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s approval.
Yılmaz expressed gratitude for the appointment and emphasized the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations. He stated that Türkiye will work to advance relations based on good-neighborly principles while supporting regional peace and stability. He also highlighted Türkiye’s continued commitment to assisting the Syrian people and contributing to a shared and more secure future.
Defense Minister Yaşar Güler met with Yılmaz to congratulate him, while international officials welcomed the appointment as a significant step in regional diplomacy.
