The plan on the table is designed to end the nearly two-year war, secure the release of hostages, and disarm Hamas, but requires Netanyahu to pivot from his current military strategy.
The pressure is coming from multiple fronts, most notably from his closest ally, President Trump. Trump has been enthusiastically promoting a 21-point deal, developed in coordination with Arab nations, and has hinted at a historic breakthrough. His recent warnings to Netanyahu against West Bank annexation and a strike in Qatar suggest he is willing to use his leverage to push for an agreement.
Adding to the diplomatic pressure is a powerful moral appeal from the families of Israeli hostages. In a public letter, they have urged Trump to ensure the deal he has championed is not undermined. Their plea puts a human face on the conflict’s devastating toll and amplifies the calls for a peaceful resolution over a continued military offensive.
Netanyahu, however, has consistently projected an image of resolve. His recent vow at the UN to “finish the job” against Hamas and his government’s continued military operations in Gaza City signal a deep-seated reluctance to halt the campaign. He remains focused on what he defines as a total victory over the militant group.
The future governance of Gaza is another major point of contention that will be addressed in the meeting. The U.S. plan reportedly calls for a transitional authority, possibly headed by Tony Blair, to oversee Gaza before handing it to a reformed Palestinian Authority.
