Putin Praises Trump, But US President’s Sanctions Threat Looms Large

by admin477351

Russian President Vladimir Putin has lauded US President Donald Trump as a sign of hope for battered US-Russia relations, even as Trump threatens Moscow with potentially “massive sanctions.” Speaking to nuclear scientists in Sarov, Putin remarked that with Trump in power, there is now a “light at the end of the tunnel” for ties that are at an “extremely low level.”

This praise comes at a critical juncture, as the Trump administration has imposed a two-week deadline for a decision on its Ukraine policy. President Trump is weighing a punitive economic response against Russia to force progress in peace talks. However, he has also floated the idea of “doing nothing,” creating a sense of uncertainty and urgency.

The key condition for avoiding sanctions appears to be a willingness from both Russia and Ukraine to engage in direct, high-level talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is reportedly open to a meeting with Putin. Trump, after meeting both leaders, is now in a “wait and see” mode, assessing their intentions before making his “very important decision.”

While Putin’s words towards Trump were conciliatory, his broader message was one of strength. He insisted on the absolute necessity of Russian sovereignty, claiming the nation would “cease to exist” without it. This declaration signals that while Moscow may be open to diplomacy, it will not compromise on what it views as its core national interests.
