Australia overcame a shaky start to secure a 17-run victory in the opening T20 against South Africa. The victory came courtesy of a blistering display from Tim David and a disciplined bowling effort led by Josh Hazlewood.
Batting first, Australia’s top order crumbled under early pressure, leaving them reeling at 6 for 75. David’s arrival at the crease transformed the innings, as he struck 83 off 52 balls, including eight maximums. His onslaught intensified after a dropped catch gifted him a reprieve.
South Africa’s chase was anchored by Rickelton’s 71, but a lack of support saw their momentum fizzle out. Hazlewood’s three for 27 removed key batsmen, while Zampa’s two wickets tightened the noose.
Maxwell, opening the bowling, dismissed an early danger man and capped his performance with a boundary-line stunner to send Rickelton back to the pavilion.
With this result, Australia have now won 23 of their last 27 T20 matches, underlining their stronghold in the format.
