Wirtz Continues to Search for Spark Despite Liverpool’s Welcome Return to Winning Ways

Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over West Ham provided much-needed relief after a disastrous run of form, but questions remain about Florian Wirtz’s adaptation to English football. The German international, who cost over £100 million from Bayer Leverkusen, has yet to register a goal or assist in the Premier League despite showing glimpses of his undoubted quality in Germany.

Against West Ham, Wirtz operated in the central creative role for which he was signed, finally featuring in his preferred position within Arne Slot’s 4-2-3-1 formation. He looked tidy and industrious throughout, contributing to the build-up for Alexander Isak’s opening goal by refusing to panic after a half-cleared corner and instead finding Cody Gakpo with an intelligent pass. However, the overall impact remained below expectations for a player of his price tag.

The German came closest to opening his account six minutes before halftime when Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s attempted interception fell kindly for him. His sidefooted shot toward the bottom corner was well-struck, but Alphonse Areola produced a fine stretching save. It was symptomatic of Wirtz’s season so far—nothing quite going right despite doing many things well.

A particular concern is the lack of understanding between Wirtz and striker Alexander Isak. The two expensive signings have yet to develop the telepathic connection that elite partnerships require, with their timing and movement often out of sync. More encouragingly, Wirtz’s tendency to drift to the left has begun showing promise in combination with Gakpo, suggesting at least one partnership may be developing.

As Liverpool adapt to Slot’s preferred system and new signings settle into English football’s demands, patience with Wirtz will be required. His technical quality is evident, and his work rate cannot be questioned. The goals and assists will eventually come, but Liverpool need them sooner rather than later if they are to salvage their season. For now, though, any win is welcome after such a torrid period.
