President Donald Trump has outlined a strategy of economic “shock and awe” aimed at ending the Ukraine war, proposing a coordinated halt of Russian oil purchases by NATO and colossal tariffs on China. This ambitious, two-front economic assault was detailed in a public statement on his Truth Social platform.
The President’s plan hinges on a significant condition for U.S. action. He announced his readiness to unleash “major Sanctions on Russia” but stipulated that this would only happen once every NATO ally has committed to and begun enforcing a full embargo on Russian oil. He lamented that some members continue to fund Moscow’s aggression, a situation he finds “shocking.”
In a move that would significantly expand the economic conflict, Trump urged NATO members to collectively impose punitive tariffs of 50% to 100% on China. This is a direct response to the deepening ties between Beijing and Moscow, particularly China’s role as a major buyer of Russian petroleum. Trump positioned these tariffs as a temporary measure, to be rescinded once the war is over.
This comprehensive economic vision is presented by Trump as a decisive solution to a protracted conflict. “If NATO does as I say, the war will end quickly,” he asserted, suggesting his plan would save lives and prevent the further waste of U.S. resources. The proposal now challenges NATO to unify on a far more aggressive economic footing than it has to date.
