Following a summit with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has issued a stern warning to Greece regarding its military activities on the Aegean islands. Erdoğan emphasized that Türkiye will not accept what it perceives as a breach of international treaties, urging Greece to scale back its military presence on islands that Ankara believes should remain demilitarized as per existing agreements. Despite Erdoğan’s appeal for amicable relations, Greece maintains that its military deployments are essential for national security and asserts its right to protect its territory. The two nations have a history of discord over maritime boundaries and proposed marine parks in the Aegean Sea.
Erdoğan clarified that Türkiye harbors no territorial ambitions but stressed the country’s determination to uphold its perceived rights. He cautioned that any disregard for international accords could escalate tensions, suggesting that Greece should reflect on historical conflicts between the two nations. In parallel, Erdoğan expressed Türkiye’s desire to enhance its involvement with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization while simultaneously nurturing robust ties with Western countries.
During his visit, Erdoğan engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, focusing on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and security issues in the Black Sea. He advocated for initiatives aimed at securing commercial shipping routes, highlighting the increasing risks faced by Turkish vessels in the region. These discussions underscore Türkiye’s strategic interest in maintaining stability in critical maritime areas.
Besides geopolitical concerns, Erdoğan addressed Türkiye’s defense partnerships, notably with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and efforts to resolve the longstanding PKK conflict. He also touched upon Ankara’s bid to rejoin the US F-35 fighter jet program, reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to advancing its domestically developed KAAN fighter aircraft while negotiations with the United States continue.
