Behind Musk’s xAI Expansion: The Battle Over Methane Power in Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has officially authorized Elon Musk’s xAI to operate 41 methane gas turbines at its Southaven site. This move allows the company to significantly increase the power supply for its “Colossus 2” datacenter. While a win for the company’s technical capabilities, the decision has ignited a firestorm of criticism from the local community.

The turbines provide the electrical current necessary to run high-powered AI chips, which are central to the development of Grok. These supercomputers require a constant and immense amount of energy that local grids often struggle to provide. Consequently, xAI has relied on this “makeshift” power plant to ensure its operations remain uninterrupted.

Environmental advocates claim that the state agency “bulldozed” the permit through without addressing valid public health concerns. Residents of Southaven have reported increased noise and air quality issues since the facility began operations last year. The NAACP has filed a lawsuit, alleging that the project was allowed to proceed without proper environmental safeguards.

The potential for increased air pollution is the core issue for many families living near the facility. The turbines emit fine particulate matter which has been linked to an increase in asthma and heart attacks. Critics argue that placing such a large fossil fuel plant in a residential area is an act of environmental injustice.

As xAI continues to expand its footprint in the South, the Colossus 2 project stands as a symbol of the friction between AI growth and community rights. With more datacenters like “Macrohardrr” planned, the industrialization of the region is accelerating. The ongoing legal challenges will determine if xAI must eventually change its energy strategy.
