Following the European Arctic Summit held in Rovaniemi, Finland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has voiced her hopes for a peaceful resolution to matters involving Greenland and the broader Arctic region between Denmark and the United States. Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been under increasing international pressure, a concern that Frederiksen addressed while expressing gratitude for the support received from European partners.
With the Arctic gaining prominence as a strategic and geopolitical hotspot, Frederiksen is keen on enhancing security and defense cooperation with the United States, particularly in relation to Greenland. A specialized high-level working group remains engaged in discussions concerning Greenland, and though Frederiksen believes it is premature to draw any firm conclusions, she maintains an optimistic outlook on achieving progress in these talks.
The summit, which took place on September 13-14, aimed to bolster a unified European strategy for the Arctic, reflecting the region’s growing importance on the global stage. European nations, alongside their transatlantic allies, have been intensifying their collaborative efforts on Arctic security, with several allied countries conducting military exercises in Greenland to assert a greater role in safeguarding the area.
This focus on the Arctic comes amid recurring interest from US President Donald Trump in acquiring Greenland, a proposition that has stirred tensions between the US and Denmark, as well as among other European allies. Frederiksen’s remarks at the summit underscore Denmark’s intent to navigate these complex international dynamics through dialogue and strengthened alliances.
