Intense rainfall in Istanbul is heightening the risk of flooding, waterlogging, and transportation disruptions, as weather conditions continue to worsen across the city. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center has reported that rain showers, which began earlier in the morning, are expected to intensify again around 11 a.m. and persist through the afternoon before tapering off by 4 p.m.
The arrival of cooler air has caused a noticeable drop in temperatures, with morning readings at approximately 14°C, remaining below the usual seasonal averages throughout the day. This combination of cold air at higher altitudes and warm, moisture-rich air near the surface is likely to lead to thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy showers.
Meteorological authorities have issued warnings for Istanbul and several other provinces in the Marmara and western Black Sea regions regarding the potential for sudden flooding, strong winds, lightning, and possible disruptions to transportation. These warnings are crucial as residents and commuters are advised to exercise caution during this period of severe weather.
However, relief is anticipated as weather conditions are expected to improve by Thursday. Forecasts suggest a rise in temperatures to around 21°C, with no significant rainfall predicted, allowing for a return to more typical autumn conditions in the region.
