In a recent announcement, Türkiye’s Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş emphasized the potential benefits of an anticipated disarmament initiative involving the PKK and its related groups. The initiative, set to commence next month, is expected to enhance stability in Iraq and bolster broader peace efforts within the region. Kurtulmuş made these remarks during a discussion with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Heybet Halbusi in Ankara, highlighting the potential for improved security in neighboring Syria as well.

The disarmament process is a critical element of Türkiye’s wider strategy aimed at establishing a “terror-free Türkiye” and a “terror-free region.” Kurtulmuş called for stronger collaboration among regional nations to overcome enduring divisions. He underscored the importance of cooperative efforts in achieving lasting peace and stability, mirroring Türkiye’s commitment to fostering cooperative ties with Iraq.

Highlighting the strengthening Türkiye-Iraq relations, Kurtulmuş referred to several agreements and memorandums that were solidified during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Iraq in 2024. Additionally, these diplomatic ties were further reinforced by the Iraqi prime minister’s reciprocal visit to Türkiye in July, which resulted in further strategic agreements.

Another significant point of cooperation between the two nations is the Development Road Project. This ambitious transport corridor is designed to enhance connectivity between Asia and Europe, passing through Iraq and Türkiye. It aims to spur economic growth across the region, and Türkiye is eager to see the project advance. Kurtulmuş expressed Türkiye’s full support for expediting the project, emphasizing its potential not only as an economic venture but also as a means to connect cities, communities, and cultures through beneficial partnerships.
