This comes in the wake of former CHP leader Özgür Özel planning to establish a new political entity following his defeat to Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu for the party’s top position.
Despite Özel’s aspirations to form a new party, it appears that not all CHP members are ready to join his venture. While those backing Özel suggest that approximately 80 lawmakers might switch sides, internal party sources estimate that the number could be closer to 60. This discrepancy raises questions about the potential of the new party to secure the position of the main opposition in the nation’s Parliament.
This development underscores a broader rift over the strategic direction of the CHP. Within the party, there are also concerns about the role of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the former mayor of Istanbul. Despite facing ongoing legal issues, İmamoğlu continues to wield considerable influence within the party, adding another layer of complexity to the existing internal dynamics.
As Özel navigates these challenges, he also confronts the possibility of losing parliamentary immunity. Multiple cases against him could pose a significant hurdle if lawmakers decide to revoke his legal protections, further complicating his political journey.
