Amid escalating regional tensions, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, National Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, and Chief of General Staff Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu have arrived in Riyadh for crucial discussions within the Strategic Political and Defense Committee of the Mecca Joint Defense Alliance. This alliance, formed in August 2026 by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, seeks to bolster joint defense capabilities and enhance regional security and cooperation.

The meeting comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is grappling with increased hostilities from the Houthi movement in Yemen. Minister Fidan is expected to underscore Türkiye’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and address threats to regional stability, including concerns about the security of sacred sites and civilian infrastructure amid ongoing attacks on Saudi soil.

A key focus of the discussions will be the institutional development of the alliance. The member nations are working to establish a permanent secretariat in Riyadh and a military headquarters, with personnel assignments anticipated upon the completion of necessary preparations. This step aims to solidify the alliance’s operational framework and facilitate more coordinated defense efforts.

Additionally, the officials are set to deliberate on the future structure of the alliance and tackle broader regional security challenges. Topics on the agenda include ensuring freedom of navigation on crucial international trade routes and exploring peaceful resolutions to ongoing conflicts. The alliance strives to offer a cooperative regional defense framework, distancing itself from forming a bloc against external powers.

Türkiye has signaled potential future expansion of the alliance to incorporate additional regional members, hinting at a more inclusive approach to regional defense and security. The outcome of these talks could significantly influence the region’s strategic landscape, impacting how regional conflicts and threats are managed collaboratively.
