Nepal in Chaos: PM Quits, Ban Reversed, But Protesters Vow to Fight On

by admin477351

Nepal has been plunged into chaos as a government attempt to ban social media backfired, leading to deadly violence, the Prime Minister’s resignation, and a reversal of the policy. Despite these major government concessions, the youth-led protest movement is vowing to continue its fight, demanding the dissolution of the entire government and signaling a protracted period of political instability for the nation.

The crisis began when the government, in a move widely seen as an act of censorship, banned popular social media platforms. This immediately triggered demonstrations led by young Nepalis, for whom these platforms are a key tool for communication and dissent. The situation took a deadly turn when security forces fired on protesters, killing 19 people and sparking nationwide outrage. The public’s fury was channeled into retaliatory actions, including the burning of politicians’ homes.

Faced with an escalating crisis, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli stepped down and lifted the ban. However, these actions have failed to pacify the streets. The protests were never just about social media; they were the culmination of deep-seated public anger over government corruption, high youth unemployment, and the stark inequality highlighted by viral videos of politicians’ families flaunting their wealth.

The movement’s persistence suggests a fundamental loss of faith in the political system. With 13 different governments since the monarchy was abolished in 2008, Nepalis have grown weary of political instability and broken promises. The current uprising represents a demand for a deeper, more meaningful change that a simple change in leadership cannot satisfy.
