Spotify is implementing new strategies to manage the presence of AI-generated music on its platform, aiming to improve transparency for its users. Starting in September, artist profiles and track listings that are identified as AI-generated will feature a label denoting them as “AI persona.” This initiative seeks to help users differentiate between authentic musicians and those created by artificial intelligence, while safeguarding the exposure of genuine artists from being overshadowed by AI-driven content.
The streaming service plans to exclude AI personas from personalized recommendations by default, thereby prioritizing real musicians in its suggestion algorithms. While artists will have the option to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated, Spotify will also employ a combination of human reviewers and AI technology to detect any AI personas that are not self-identified.
This move comes amid a surge in the production of AI-generated music, a trend that Spotify has been monitoring closely. The company previously revealed it had eliminated 75 million spam tracks over a span of 12 months, underscoring the vast influx of artificial and low-quality content that digital music platforms are contending with.
As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes that transparency is an essential component of its operations. The company acknowledges that listeners increasingly desire clarity on whether the creators behind the music they enjoy are real individuals or AI-generated entities, and it is adapting its platform to meet these evolving expectations.
