Türkiye is poised to embark on an ambitious drilling project aimed at tapping into oil reserves in the western Black Sea, marking a significant step in its ongoing efforts to bolster domestic energy resources. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar highlighted the technical challenges of the endeavor, noting that the drilling could be a lengthy process. As part of a broader strategy, Türkiye has outlined plans to undertake six exploration wells throughout the western, central, and eastern Black Sea regions by the year 2026.
In recent years, the country has notably expanded its offshore exploration capabilities, now boasting a fleet of six deep-water drilling vessels. These vessels are actively engaged in exploration and development activities in the Black Sea, underscoring Türkiye’s commitment to increasing its energy independence. The strategic expansion of its offshore operations aligns with the nation’s efforts to reduce reliance on imported energy and enhance its domestic production capabilities.
Türkiye’s ambitions extend to its Black Sea gas fields, where it aims to double output by the end of the year. Following a series of discoveries since 2020, the estimated reserves of Black Sea gas have soared to approximately 785 billion cubic meters. Current production stands at about 9.5 million cubic meters daily, which suffices for the natural gas needs of roughly 4 million households. By 2028, the government anticipates that production will reach an annual output of 16 to 17 billion cubic meters.
In addition to these offshore ventures, Türkiye is making strides in expanding its LNG infrastructure and pipeline connections. The country is keen to fortify its role as a regional energy transit hub, exploring new routes that could facilitate the transport of gas from the Middle East to European markets. This multifaceted approach is integral to Türkiye’s overarching energy strategy, aiming to enhance energy security and bolster its position in the regional energy landscape.
