Amid escalating missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, European leaders are convening in Kyiv to address the urgent need for air-defense support and explore new strategies to increase pressure on Russia. This significant gathering, known as the Coalition of the Willing, is being spearheaded by Britain, France, and Germany, with participation from several other European leaders joining remotely. Antonio Costa, the President of the EU Council, is also in attendance.
In recent weeks, Russian missile strikes have intensified, with Kyiv and other cities frequently targeted, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to residential areas. In response, Ukraine has consistently urged its allies for more robust air-defense systems and interceptor missiles to safeguard its citizens. Recognizing this critical demand, Britain is poised to declare its support for Ukraine, while France plans to facilitate local production of the long-range SCALP missile. Additionally, France has committed to supplying more interceptor missiles to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced concerns over the declining deliveries of Patriot interceptor missiles, noting that Ukraine received 675 such missiles in 2023, but only 364 are projected for 2025, with a further drop to 264 anticipated in 2026. As the winter season approaches, Kyiv is requesting at least 300 interceptors to meet its defensive needs.
Ukraine’s reliance on advanced Western air-defense systems remains substantial as the country seeks to counter the challenging threat posed by Russian ballistic missiles, which are notoriously difficult to intercept. In response, European allies are actively pursuing solutions to enhance the supply of these critical defense systems while simultaneously maintaining diplomatic pressure on Moscow.
