In a recent meeting held in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lauded Türkiye’s diplomatic endeavors aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. The discussions took place with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who was awarded the Order of Merit, Second Class, by Zelenskyy. This honor was in recognition of Türkiye’s proactive role in advocating for peace initiatives amid the hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.
The dialogue between the Ukrainian and Turkish representatives centered on the prevailing diplomatic climate, the status of military engagements, and potential pathways to reinvigorate peace talks. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s steadfast mediation efforts and voiced optimism for enhanced collaboration, notably through the recent ratification of the Ukraine-Türkiye Free Trade Agreement. This agreement is seen as a pivotal step in bolstering economic and strategic ties between the two nations.
Türkiye has played a distinctive role in the conflict, maintaining relationships with both Ukraine and Russia. It has previously facilitated peace negotiations in Istanbul and contributed to prisoner exchanges as well as the Black Sea grain initiative. These efforts underscore Türkiye’s commitment to fostering dialogue and de-escalation in the region. During the meeting, Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s stance that the “Istanbul format” of negotiations should persist, and he confirmed Türkiye’s willingness to host future peace discussions.
Furthermore, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha echoed the sentiment of readiness for dialogue by stating that President Zelenskyy is open to meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Türkiye, contingent upon favorable conditions. This potential summit is seen as a crucial opportunity for direct dialogue, which could pave the way for resolving the conflict.
