In a bid to bolster economic ties, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently engaged in discussions with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Riikka Purra, along with Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto. The meetings aimed to enhance trade and investment connections between India and Finland, focusing on expanding collaborative efforts across various critical sectors.

The conversations centered on strengthening partnerships in areas such as digitalisation, innovation, and research and development. Both nations are keen on fostering growth in startups and forming robust business alliances. Additionally, the dialogue explored avenues for cooperation in cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, and space. Sustainability also emerged as a key area of mutual interest.

A significant topic of the meetings was the prospective India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Discussions highlighted how the agreement could serve as a catalyst for increasing bilateral trade, attracting investments, and opening up new business opportunities. Both countries expressed a shared interest in how the FTA might enhance their economic interactions.

These diplomatic exchanges occur as India and the European Union engage in ongoing negotiations to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement. The aim is to fortify economic ties and advance cooperation across significant strategic sectors, thereby establishing a more integrated and mutually beneficial economic relationship.
