In a recent phone call, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed the ongoing efforts to normalize relations between Türkiye and Armenia, as well as recent developments in the region. The conversation marks a significant step in the ongoing rapprochement between the two countries, which have experienced decades of strained ties.
During their exchange, Pashinyan extended his greetings for the Eid al-Adha holiday to Erdoğan, while both leaders assessed the progress made in enhancing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation. Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye’s dedication to advancing the normalization process through practical measures aimed at fostering direct trade and bolstering economic engagement. He also emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to promoting peace, stability, and long-term security in the region.
The normalization process, initiated in late 2021, involved the appointment of special envoys by both sides to lead negotiations. Since then, Türkiye and Armenia have taken concrete steps toward improving ties, which included the resumption of commercial flights in 2022. This dialogue represents part of a broader effort to enhance regional stability and foster economic connectivity within the South Caucasus.
Despite the challenges that remain, the high-level contact between Ankara and Yerevan underscores both governments’ shared intention to pursue a more constructive bilateral relationship. They continue to express support for dialogue and confidence-building measures, aiming to increase communication, build trust, and open avenues for cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
