Iran-US Talks Show Progress as Both Sides Agree on Guiding Principles in Geneva

by admin477351

Diplomatic momentum appears to be building between Iran and the United States after the latest round of indirect nuclear talks concluded in Geneva with what Iranian officials described as a meaningful step forward. The two sides, communicating through Omani intermediaries, reached agreement on “general guiding principles” — a phrase that signals a framework may be emerging even as major gaps remain.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, called the atmosphere “more constructive” than the first round held earlier this month, noting that “good progress” had been made. He acknowledged, however, that both sides hold entrenched positions that would take time to reconcile, and cautioned against expecting a rapid resolution.

The talks, which lasted roughly three and a half hours, focused on how Tehran might constrain its nuclear activities under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Central to Iran’s offer was a plan to dilute its stockpile of 60% highly enriched uranium — material that is nearly weapons-grade and unnecessary for a civilian nuclear program — and to allow IAEA inspectors broader access.

Meanwhile, Washington continued its military buildup in the region, with US warships stationed off the coast of Oman. Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, responded with characteristic defiance, warning that Iran possessed weapons capable of sinking those vessels, while also insisting his country would not participate in talks where the only predetermined outcome was denial of nuclear energy rights.

A further round of talks is expected in approximately two weeks, during which both sides are anticipated to exchange draft texts. Iran maintained throughout that it would not discuss its ballistic missile program or its support for allied forces across the Middle East — positions that remain significant sticking points for the US side.
